iPhone Camera Not Working? Causes and Checks

Work out why an iPhone camera shows a black screen, blur or errors before booking a repair.

A black camera view, a blurry photo or a 'camera not available' error can come from the app, the lens, the module or a drop that shifted internal parts.

What the symptoms can mean

A black viewfinder in every app suggests hardware. Blur that will not focus can mean a damaged lens cover or a knocked autofocus mechanism, while errors after a drop point to the module or its connector.

What to do next

Restart the phone, test the camera in another app and clean the lens cover gently. If the fault survives a restart and appears in every app, the camera module needs a workshop diagnosis.

How camera faults are diagnosed

Each camera is tested separately — wide, ultra-wide and telephoto use different modules, so a fault in one tells the technician exactly where to look. The lens cover glass is checked for cracks and haze, connectors are reseated, and the module itself is tested for autofocus and stabilisation. A drop can crack the lens cover without touching the module, which is a much smaller repair than it looks.

Protecting the cameras

A case with a raised ring around the camera block is the single best protection, since the lenses sit proud of the back glass. Avoid resting the phone on its camera side on rough surfaces, and keep pocket sand and keys away from the lens covers — scratches there soften every photo you take.

When to arrange a diagnosis

If the problem continues after safe basic checks, a proper diagnosis is the best next step. It helps separate a replaceable part from a deeper board, power or software issue before any repair is approved.

Common questions

Why is my iPhone camera blurry all of a sudden?

Usually a scratched or hazed lens cover, or a knock that disturbed the autofocus. Cleaning the cover first costs nothing; if blur remains, the module needs checking.

Can a dropped iPhone camera be repaired?

Yes. The affected module or lens cover is replaced and focus and stabilisation are retested. Most camera repairs are completed the same day.
